OVERVIEW

FORM/WORKS is a conceptual apparel project exploring the relationship between movement, material systems and product architecture.

Rather than organizing garments through seasonal collections or conventional apparel categories, the project is structured around a series of frameworks, each developed for a specific use case, environmental condition and performance requirement.

Products are generated through the interaction of Frameworks, Textile Systems and object-specific applications, forming a unified system that prioritizes function, context and material behavior.

PURPOSE

FORM/WORKS began as an exploration of how apparel might be designed when performance requirements are treated as the primary design input.

The project asks a simple question: given a specific physical demand and a defined operating environment, what should a garment be required to do?

Rather than starting from established product categories, aesthetic conventions or seasonal narratives, FORM/WORKS begins with the conditions of use. Material selection, construction methods and product typologies emerge as responses to those conditions, resulting in a system where garments are developed according to purpose rather than expectation.

PRINCIPLES

+ System Before Product
No garment is designed in isolation. Every product exists as part of a framework, and its characteristics are set by the requirements of that framework rather than by trend or category convention.

+ Function Before Category
A garment's purpose is defined before its category. What a product needs to do determines its construction, not the other way around.

+ Documentation As Design
How a product is identified, organized and explained is treated as part of the design itself, not as material added after the fact.

FORM/WORKS products are developed through a three-stage system consisting of Frameworks (FW.###), Textile Systems (TS_##) and Objects (FW.###/TS_##-ID).

The process begins with a Framework. Frameworks define the operational context of a product, including intended movement profile, environmental conditions and performance requirements. Rather than starting with a garment category, development begins with the conditions the product is expected to operate within.

Once a Framework has established the requirements, an appropriate Textile System is selected. Textile Systems define material behavior and determine how a product responds to heat, moisture, movement, weather exposure and mechanical stress. Each system is developed around a specific set of performance characteristics and can be applied across multiple Frameworks where those characteristics are required.

The final stage is the Object. Objects translate Framework requirements and Textile System behaviors into specific product applications. Caps, tops, shorts and outerwear are not treated as independent categories, but as outputs generated from the interaction of both systems.

This structure allows products to be developed according to operational requirements first, with material selection and product typology emerging as responses to those requirements rather than predetermined starting points.

METHODOLOGY

FORM/WORKS draws its working method from industrial design, technical documentation and equipment classification rather than from apparel trend cycles.

The project starts by defining a use case and the conditions it involves, then works backward to the material and construction choices that meet it. The relationship between function and form stays direct, and every product can be traced back to the reasoning behind it.

The same method shapes how the project is presented, from naming conventions to the way products are organized and described.

END

FORM/WORKS is an ongoing exploration of system-oriented apparel design, where frameworks, materials and products are built as parts of one architecture rather than as separate decisions.
